Name the observation, not the cause

Write a line crosses the lower letter rather than a minting defect is present. Record where it begins, where it ends and whether it appears in more than one photograph. Include an overall view so the mark’s position is unambiguous. If glare obscures part of it, say that directly. Do not turn the absence of visible detail into a claim that an expected feature is missing from the coin itself.

Compare the same region fairly

Find a reference for the proposed issue and compare the corresponding area, not a vaguely similar design. Keep differences in image angle and lighting in your notes. Ask which observations support the proposed explanation and what remains uncertain. A scanner’s possible error label is not a specialist finding. Avoid repeatedly generating answers until one calls the mark valuable; that selects an appealing description without adding evidence about how the feature was produced.

Prepare a focused specialist question

Make a compact packet with both faces, the relevant detail, your literal description and the reference used. Ask what further examination would be needed to distinguish the possibilities, rather than asking the reviewer to endorse a rarity claim. Preserve the current appearance in the record instead of changing the surface to expose the mark. Keep any later opinion with its author and date, and separate it from an independently issued grading or authentication document if one exists. An unresolved feature can remain interesting without becoming a sales claim.
