Choose a repeatable reading order
Start at a visible landmark and work around the design in a consistent direction. Record the date, denomination text and other lettering in separate lines. Preserve line breaks when they help explain the layout. Use a question mark for an unreadable character and explain that convention once. If a mark might be either a letter or a decorative shape, describe its appearance instead of choosing whichever interpretation produces a more exciting search result.
Distinguish the kinds of detail
The US Mint describes a mint mark as a letter or symbol identifying where a coin was made. Do not apply that explanation automatically to every small mark on every world coin. First record its location, shape and relation to nearby text. Compare it with an appropriate reference for the proposed issue. Keep your literal reading beside the reference’s interpretation so a later correction does not require reconstructing what the photograph originally showed.
Search in small, documented steps
Begin with a clear phrase or combination of readable details, rather than a fully guessed country and date. Save the reference page and note which element matched. If the reference spells a word differently, return to the image before changing your transcription. Separate translation from reading: knowing what a phrase means does not establish that those are the letters on your coin. End the session with confirmed characters, uncertain characters and the next useful image or reference, even if the complete name is still unknown.
